The data of WDCM revealed that, until now, 484 Culture Collection Centers have been founded in at least 58 countries, more than 800,000 cultures have been conserved, most of them are classical culture, which can be important and primary material of industrial culture.
Southern Yangtze University started to build the Culture Collection Center of Industrial Microorganisms in 1965. Since then, we sample in the whole country and do the culture isolation each 2 and 3 years. The cultures conserved nowadays belong to 514 different genus, and 3851 species. Once we have conserved almost 50000 isolates, which contain more than 33000 bacteria, more than 5500 actinomycete, more than 7870 yeast and more than 3200 filamentous fungi. The subbanks associated with special subjects as follows have also been established. Cellulo-hydrolyzing isolates (more than 13000), amylo-hydrolyzing isolates (more than 21000), lipase-producing isolates (more than 8000), other enzyme product isolates (include protease, phytase, pectinase, chitinase, etc.), osmophilic yeast (5000 strains), xylose utilization bacteria (8200 strains) as well as thermophilic bacteria (3200 strains).
Since 2004, our work has been supported by Ministry of Education and Ministry of Science and technology, China. The main aim of our work is to sort, identify, classify, assess, and long-term store our isolates of potential industrial application, and subsequently construct a public-open website.
Today, we have hadabout 9500 strains alive, which contain 3790 fungi, 960 yeasts and 4750 bacteria. Additionally, we have developed and conserved more than 3000 photos of the shape of cell and colonies. 75 different kinds of cloning and expression vectors and 124 associated host cells have also been collected and conserved. By the end of 2010, the total number of our collection with the description in details will be beyond 15000 items.
